I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and I got my first taste of rock-n-roll early in life. My Father was also a drummer in several local bands and he would take my Mother and I along from time to time to watch, I was about 4 years old. (Or at least that is as early as I can remember.) I got my first drum set when I was 5 years old and I really didn’t want anything to do with playing drums until I turned 13, when I joined the school band.
When I was 15 I started listening to music I liked rather than the music my parents liked. A friend of mine, who is a bass player introduced me to a band called RUSH. Wow! The drummer Neil Peart was incredible, and still is. With the influences of my dad, my band director Jeff Carver with his Jazz influences and listening to RUSH, I decided that I wanted to become a rock-n-roll drummer and have done so for well over 20 years.
In High School, with a few school buddies, we got a band together named “Full Tilt”. We played pretty much every high school dance until we graduated, as well as several real fun outdoor gigs. After high school I played in several bands from new wave (Sonic Drones), to a Hair Band (ROX) to heavy original music (The Reign) With the Band “The Reign”, we traveled around the five state area for about 2 years gigging. In the late 90’s I moved back to my home town of North Branch, Minnesota to raise my two daughters, Cassie and Brittany. At that time I played around with a couple local bands then joined a band with my high school buddies again and named the group “Stooge”. We were together for several years on and off, we had a great local following!!
In 2004, I married my best friend Holly, who has three children, John, Ariann and Deric. After a 7 year break from banging on the drums, the urge to play again was strong! After talking with Holly about playing again she gave me 100% support. I auditioned for several bands and found one that really worked well, I could tell even after jamming a few songs with them that our collective musical styles jelled well together. “Sunset Blue” is a band that has a great variety of music from R&B to 80’s rock, from Motown to Current Hits. This band has a lot to offer and is a very refreshing change for me. I am ready to play for another 20 years!
Oh, I suppose a little info about my gear. I use Yamaha acoustic and electric drums, Zildjian cymbals, DW pedals and what ever sticks I can get my hands on, they all break the same!
